Acupuncture is an holistic approach to the management of illness and the maintenance of health.

At P Bassett Physiotherapy we have 2 clinicians trained and registered with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. They are able to treat pain conditions such as headache and lower back pain.

NICE, the National Institute for the Health and Clinical Excellence, support the use of acupuncture in the management of back pain after careful consideration of the research evidence available.

What does treatment involve?

Treatment is tailored to every patient's individual needs.

Acupuncture involves swift and virtually painless insertion of fine sterilised needles through the skin. New needles are used at each appointment for each patient, in accordance with strict standards approved by the Department of Health.

For most people the sensation of needle insertion is minimal, a slight prick. Following this, there is usually a momentary dull ache, numbness, tingling or hot sensation, a feeling known in acupuncture as 'Deqi' (pronounced 'derchee').You will soon become used to this.

In Summary

In the UK acupuncture is one of the most popular and well established complementary therapies. Many people come to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. It can work alongside conventional medicine and it is a natural medicine without the use of drugs. Extensive practise and research has shown acupunctures' effectiveness in helping back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee.

Our therapists, Pippa Bassett and Tom Jacobs are available to answer your questions on the use of acupuncture in physiotherapy.
